Rider Ability Levels

The Rider Ability Guide was created in response to suggestions by grassroots groups and organisers to communicate difficulty levels and expectations for group rides.

Feel free to use this to help grade your group rides or events in a consistent manner.

Level 1 - First timer

  • You are riding for the first time.

  • You have limited ability to start and brake with a maximum speed of 10km/hr.

Use this for group rides if:

  • It is suitable for learning how to ride.

  • There are zero pedestrians.

  • There are wide pathways or open space.

  • There are no challenging turns or any potential need to brake suddenly.

  • There is no requirement to use local roads.

Level 2 - Beginner

  • You have an ability to ride, avoid pedestrians and brake confidently with a maximum speed of 20km/hr.

  • You are starting to experience different terrains such as grass, trails and unsealed surfaces.

  • You know how to bail safely.

Use this for group rides if:

    • There are limited interactions with pedestrians.

    • There are wide pathways or open space.

    • There are no challenging turns or any potential need to brake suddenly.

    • There is limited requirement to use local roads.

Level 3 - Intermediate

  • You are confident in carving, avoiding other pedestrians and travelling up to 30km/hr.

  • You can control speed at turns.

  • You have more than 6 months experience.

  • You are riding on more difficult terrains such as grass, trails and unsealed surfaces.

Use this for group rides if:

    • There will be a need to either safely pass or give way to pedestrians during the group ride.

    • There are narrow pathways.

    • There are challenging turns or a potential need to brake suddenly.

    • There will be a requirement to ride on local roads or more difficult all terrain surfaces for some of the ride.

    • There may be interactions with other cars when crossing or going to dedicated off-road micro-mobility lanes.

Level 4 - Advanced

  • You are confident in carving, avoiding other pedestrians and travelling up to 40km/hr.

  • You have more than 12 months experience.

  • You can ride your device on trails, unsealed surfaces and BMX pump tracks competently.

  • Advanced stopping technique such as the one legged semi circle technique. (For EUC)

Use this for group rides if:

    • There are high amounts of interaction to safely pass or give way to pedestrians during the group ride.

    • There are narrow pathways.

    • There are challenging turns or a potential need to brake suddenly.

    • Local roads or more difficult all terrain surfaces are a significant part of the ride.

    • There may be interactions with other cars when crossing or going to dedicated off-road micro-mobility lanes.

Level 5 - Expert

  • You are confident in carving, avoiding other pedestrians and travelling over 40km/hr.

  • You can perform jumps or drops with airtime.

  • You are able to ride over 35km without a break on group rides.

  • Advanced stopping technique such as the one legged semi circle technique. (For EUC)

Use this for group rides if:

    • There are high amounts of interaction to safely pass or give way to pedestrians during the group ride.

    • There are narrow pathways.

    • There are challenging turns and need to brake suddenly during the ride.

    • Roads or more difficult all-terrain surfaces are a significant part of the ride.

    • There are interactions with other cars when crossing or going to dedicated off-road micro-mobility lanes.

    • It requires jumps with drops or airtime.
